William Kentridge

Drawing for the film sobriety, obesity & growing old 1991

"The activity of drawing is a way of trying to understand who we are and how we operate in the world" (Kentridge)

Going to the MoMA a couple of weeks ago, I did not intend to spare that much time with the Johannesburg born artist William Kentridge. I was thinking it was just going to be a show of drawings. How unfair and prejudiced I am at times. The "Five Themes" exhibit at the MoMA makes you rethink your feelings for drawings as these continue to pull you in to a different and exciting sphere during the course of the show.
As with Paintings... the world of drawings are still vibrantly alive:)
Kentridge who is most known for his animated films brings himself into them as a sort of stage manager... the films are poetic, political and has a dash of humor.
Actually, I think I will have to go back and view the show again. This time I would stay awhile.
