Material Gestures

Gerard Richter
Tate Modern
Cage 1-6

Finally most of my boxes are unpacked and I am starting to feel that I have a home again. We are waiting for our new sofa though and most of our artwork is still in New York.
Early this morning I therefore came to think of what Art I wish I could surround myself with, and I came to remember the Gerhard Richter room at the Tate Modern. How I wish I could enfold myself in these large canvases, what fine ambience they give, what composition they portray.

These paintings were inspired and named after the great American composer John Cage (1912-1992), and the complicated, brilliant avant-garde music that he left us.

"I have nothing to say and I'm saying it"
John Cage

"I don't know what I want I am inconsistent, non-committal, passive, I like the indefinite,
the boundless, I like continual uncertainty"
Gerhard Richter

These paintings were done in 2006 (lent to the Tate from a private collection). Gerhard Richter moves on, he is in a constant evolution. His art is really indefinite and boundless. I am always excited to see his work. October 2011, the Tate Modern will show a chronological retrospective of Richter's work (he turns 80 this year) and I can't wait to see it.

With Love
Kristin

  1. WOW!!! I have seen those impressive works of Art in a huge exhibition in Munich and I am nothing but impressed! Especially because he lives close to where I grew up and contributed an amazing window to the Cathedral of Cologne I am a huge fan. Thank you for this post Kristin!

    Much love, Bettina

  2. Thanks for the discovery. Il like your words "what Art I wish I could surround myself with"... It's a big question. And like the "complicated" as well for John Cage ;)

  3. Hello Kristin:
The Richter paintings are, as you suggest, truly impressive in size, colour and composition and the retrospective to be held later this year will be something not to be missed. Tate Modern, for anyone who does not know it, is, in our view, a must.

For a time in Budapest we acted as guides ['docents' in the United States] at the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art. There are many exciting Hungarian artists who deserve to be better known outside of Hungary.

  6. Wow, what a great harmony of colors. I went to school with someone who casually mentioned that his family had a room at the Tate Modern (whoa right?)

  8. these are just lovely! i could totally go swimming in them and splash around a while. i keep thinking of your wonderful life surrounded (soon!, yay!) by so much art. i guess i'm just having a bit of mover's remorse. i was listening to a radio show on a sense of place this morning too, and it made me think (again): what in the world are we doing here? but i guess we're figuring things out slowly.
    have fun in paris!
